Experiences
James Romeo… I have visited Fort Pulaski a few times. The story of how the fort was captured and the superiority of the rifled artillery that was used is evident from the damage the walls sustained in the battle that can still clearly be seen today. The most memorable experience I've had at the fort was the annual Candle Lantern Tour that takes place each year during the Christmas season. It is a special experience to see the fort lit as it historically would have been before the use of electricity. The tour commemorates the celebration of Christmas at the fort in 1861, before it was captured by the Union. The tour is led by historical reenactors who take on the role of soldiers entertaining visiting friends and family who have visited the fort for the 1861 holiday party. They treated us to music, and a demonstration of night time musket and canon firing.
