SMITHGALL WOODS STATE PARK

HELEN, GEORGIA

Experiences

Joseph Caylor… While most people think of Helen, Georgia and a state park near it, many are surprised that there are actually two instead of the more familiar Unicoi State Park. Tucked away just south of the little town, the other park, Smithgall Woods is a great spot for anyone who likes the outdoors, but to relax and unwind. A very popular and well-known activity is trout fishing... 3 types (Rainbow, Brook, and Brown) are located in Dukes Creek, that runs through the park. This isn't your typical park in the sense of camping (although the lodge and cottages are beautiful there), but you can definitely set your own pace here, although it has been set aside as a heritage preserve. The last time I was here, the park had a bee colony set up and I waded in Dukes Creek, one of the coldest I'll ever go in!
